Description
This course provides an introductory to intermediate level foundation of knowledge on the main solar renewable energy technologies applied to buildings, from small single family dwellings to large commercial buildings in climates around the world.The first series of lectures cover the concept and terms of renewable and sustainable energy options for buildings as well as delving into benchmarks for building energy end uses to support evaluation of the benefits of these options. The second series of lectures focuses on solar thermal options taking the learner through how they operate, what factors affect their performance and some initial ballpark estimations that can be used to begin general evaluation. It covers all the main elements & components of these technologies with details that are taken into consideration when evaluating and integrating these into buildings, whether it is a new build or retrofit project.The third series of lecture turns the focus onto solar electric options exploring different types and photovoltaic (PV) systems and hybrid PVT technology. The beginning of this series delves into electricity end uses in buildings including general energy use benchmarks that are useful for evaluating the savings benefits of solar electric options. It covers all the main elements & components of these technologies including key details for successful application.Completing this course a learner will be able to both determine the suitability of these solar technologies for any type of building project and identify what factors will need to be addressed for their successful application. The content includes typical values for general building energy demands and for thermal and electrical outputs that can be expected from the technologies.
