Build a complete energy report from raw data: Power Query, data modelling, DAX, report design, AI tools and the Service
What you’ll learn
– Load, clean and reshape real data in Power Query, including unpivot, merge and parameters
– Design a star-schema data model with fact and dimension tables and correct relationships
– Write DAX measures for unit conversions, shares, growth, carbon intensity and rankings using CALCULATE, variables and RANKX
– Build clear, accessible report pages with slicers, matrices, conditional formatting, tooltips, navigation and bookmarks
– Apply advanced analytics: what-if parameters, calculation groups, decomposition trees, forecasts, key influencers and rolling averages
– Use Copilot, ChatGPT and Claude to draft DAX, and test and correct AI-written measures in DAX query view
– Publish to the Power BI Service, explain sharing, refresh and gateways, and secure a report with row-level security
– Check every key result by hand and verify it in Power BI before presenting findings
Requirements
A Windows computer with internet access to download the free Power BI Desktop. No previous Power BI experience is needed; basic spreadsheet skills (e.g. Excel) are helpful. Optional for Lesson 12: a Power BI account to publish to the Service (you can follow by watching). Optional: an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude; Copilot is explained but not required.
Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
Learn Microsoft Power BI the way it is used at work: by building one complete, real report from a raw data file to a published, secured and documented dashboard.
Project TERAWATT is a Global Energy Transition Dashboard for an international energy consultancy. Using the open Our World in Data energy dataset (CC BY 4.0), you analyse electricity generation, the energy mix, carbon intensity and electricity per person for every country from 2000 to 2024.
What you will do, step by step
• Load a 23,377-row CSV file and clean it in Power Query: filter rows, choose and type columns, unpivot, merge a lookup and use a file-path parameter.
• Build a star-schema data model with fact and dimension tables and correct relationships.
• Write DAX measures for unit conversions, shares, growth since 2000, year-over-year growth and carbon intensity, using CALCULATE and variables.
• Design report pages for the United States, Europe, China and the rest of the world, with slicers, matrices, conditional formatting, tooltips, a theme, navigation, bookmarks, alt text and a phone layout.
• Use advanced analytics: what-if and field parameters, calculation groups, the decomposition tree, anomaly detection, forecasts, key influencers, top segments and rolling averages with visual calculations.
• Use AI properly: what Copilot can do and what it needs, and how to use ChatGPT and Claude to draft DAX, then catch their mistakes in DAX query view.
• Publish to the Power BI Service, understand sharing, refresh and the gateway, and secure the report with row-level security.
How you learn. Every lesson works one important number out by hand on a whiteboard first, then verifies it in Power BI, so you understand the result and not just the click. Each lesson starts from a checkpoint file and ends with a new one.
Included: 15 project-based video lessons (over 4 hours), starting data or checkpoint files and solution .pbix files, step-by-step checklists, notes with glossaries, practice exercises with worked solutions, six section quizzes, and captions in ten languages.
About the use of AI in this course: the narration uses an AI-generated voice, captions were translated with AI assistance, and AI tools are also a topic of Lessons 11, 14 and 15. All numbers were checked by hand and in Power BI.
Who this course is for
Beginners who want to learn Power BI through one complete, realistic project; Excel users and analysts moving to Power BI; students and professionals preparing for data-analyst roles or the PL-300 exam; energy, sustainability and business professionals who report on data; Power BI users who want to use AI tools (Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude) responsibly.
